Francis D. Ferdinand, MD, FACS

Dr. Ferdinand obtained his Doctor of Medicine from Autonomous University of Guadalajara School of Medicine in Mexico and completed his General Surgery Residency at the Medical College of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. He went on to specialize in Cardiothoracic Surgery, where he trained at the University of Chicago and The Royal Brompton Hospital in the United Kingdom. He served as faculty at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, the Sydney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University, and Albany Medical College in New York where he was Director of Cardiothoracic Surgery prior to his recruitment to the University of Pittsburgh. He is currently a full Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery and the Medical Director and Division Chief of Cardiac Surgery at UPMC Hamot in Erie, PA. Dr. Ferdinand is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.

Dr. Ferdinand is dedicated to the education and career development of trainees at all levels, including medical students, residents and fellows. He serves as UPMC Hamot’s site director for teaching integrated and independent residents and fellows and has been involved in program curriculum development. He has provided countless presentations both locally and internationally to share his surgical experiences and expertise. Dr. Ferdinand is also dedicated to scholarly work and research. He has served as a principal investigator and co-investigator on a number of studies and to date has authored or coauthored over 30 peer-reviewed journal articles, as well as several invited manuscripts, editorials, book chapters, abstracts, and case reports. He is an active member of several academic societies and additionally, contributes his time to the profession as a referee of scientific journals.

Research Interests

Dr. Ferdinand's research interests include quality and resource utilization of differing revascularization strategies, quality and resource utilization of differing treatment strategies in structural heart disease and investigating the effectiveness of wellness programs and healthcare utilization.
