Matthew J. Schuchert, MD, FACS

Dr. Schuchert is currently an Associate Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery, with UPMC Presbyterian as his primary practice site. He has an impressive educational background, having graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Sciences from Yale University and his Doctor of Medicine degree from the Johns Hopkins University, where he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honors Society. Dr. Schuchert completed his General Surgery Residency and Cardiothoracic Surgery Fellowship training at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, where he remained on as faculty. He is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. Dr. Schuchert is a highly esteemed faculty member; he was recognized as Thoracic Surgery Faculty of the Year in 2010 and received the Chairman’s Award in Cardiothoracic Surgery in 2015.

Dr. Schuchert previously served as the Program Director of UPMC Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery’s Integrated Residency Program and Independent Fellowship Program and has recently transitioned to the role of Associate Program Director. He has contributed immensely toward resident and fellowship education by way of curriculum design, journal clubs, lecture and workshop series and is a highly respected trainee advocate. Dr. Schuchert is the Co-Director of the Department’s NHLBI T32 Training Grant, where he is involved in clinical and research mentorship of program appointees. He has played an integral role in the mentorship and career development of many program trainees.

Dr. Schuchert is a highly accomplished scholar: to date he has authored or coauthored over 120 peer-reviewed publications as well as numerous invited manuscripts, book chapters, abstracts and presentations. He also serves as a reviewer for several scientific journals. Dr. Schuchert holds membership in numerous academic societies, including but not limited to the American College of Chest Physicians, Society of Thoracic Surgeons, and American Association for Thoracic Surgery. Dr. Schuchert is a critical member of the Department’s educational leadership team, in addition to devoting time toward both optimizing patient care through surgical management and his strong academic/research focus.

Research Interests

Dr. Schuchert's research interests include lung cancer immunology, how immune status influences outcomes in lung cancer, and achieving immunomodulation to augment the host response to tumors.
