Dr. Sanchez obtained his medical degree from Universidad Nacional de Cordoba in Argentina, after which he completed a Thoracic Surgery Residency and Fellowship in Pediatric Surgery in Brazil. He earned his Master of Science and Doctorate in Physiology in Pulmonary Medicine from Universidade Federal Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil, and completed a research fellowship with the Division of Thoracic Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania. He did his Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at the University of Maryland, where he remained on as an Assistant Professor prior to moving to the University of Washington. Dr. Sanchez was recruited to the University of Pittsburgh in 2017 where he now holds the titles of Associate Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery within the Division of Lung Transplantation and Brack G. Hattler Professor in Cardiothoracic Transplantation. At present Dr. Sanchez is the Division Chief of Lung Transplant and Lung Failure, Program Director of the Lung Transplant Fellowship, and Associate Program Director of the Integrated CT Surgery Residency. Additionally he is the Vice Chair of Benign Lung Diseases, Surgical Director of Lung Transplant and ECMO, and Director of the Lung Transplant Research and EVLP Program.

To date Dr. Sanchez has published over 100 original peer-reviewed articles, numerous case reports, invited manuscripts and editorials, several book chapters, and nearly 60 abstracts. He is extensively involved with Departmental didactics and educating trainees at all levels, including medical students, residents, fellows, and junior faculty. He has served as a mentor to undergraduate and medical students, residents, clinical instructors, and postdoctoral fellows. Dr. Sanchez is also involved with curriculum development for faculty training, particularly the Ex Vivo Lung Perfusion Training Program. Dr. Sanchez serves as principal investigator and co-investigator on several active studies and his research is funded by multiple grants. He has given lectures and presentations both domestically and abroad and allocates his time as a contributing editor and referee for various scientific journals.

Research Interests

Dr. Sanchez's research focuses on novel therapies using extracorporeal perfusion system to minimize surgical complications related to lung transplantation, including ischemia/reperfusion injury, primary graft dysfunction, airway ischemia, and chronic allograft dysfunction.
