Rajeev Dhupar, MD, MBA, FACS

Dr. Dhupar is an accomplished surgeon, investigator, and educator in the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery.  After earning his medical degree at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson, he completed his General Surgery residency at the University of Pittsburgh followed by Cardiothoracic training at MD Anderson Cancer Center. He has clinical practices at UPMC Shadyside Hospital and the Veteran's Affairs Pittsburgh Healthcare System. As Chief of Thoracic Surgery at the VA he built the robotic thoracic surgery and robotic bronchoscopy programs, and currently as the Assistant Vice President for Research and Education he aims to foster a robust surgeon-scientist effort. 

His postdoctoral research focused on transplant immunology and ischemia reperfusion injury, supported by both an NIH T-32 grant and the Society of University Surgeons. Dr. Dhupar has been funded as a Principal Investigator on VA Career Development and Merit Awards focused on cancer and toxic respiratory exposures, as well as other societal grants.  He has been a co-investigator on projects funded by the DoD and NIH, and currently serves as faculty for two T-32 grants at the University of Pittsburgh.  Beyond his research, he is highly active in both the general surgery and thoracic surgery training programs, with an integral role in developing the trainee wellness program.  Dr. Dhupar has authored over 60 peer-reviewed publications and is a member of the Society of University Surgeons, American College of Surgeons, Society of Thoracic Surgeons, and Association of VA Surgeons.

Research Interests

Dr. Dhupar's research interests include tumor and immune environment of malignant pleural effusions, toxic respiratory exposures and lung cancer susceptibility, opioid stewardship, shared decision making, and novel platforms to enhance resident education.
