Stephen D. Waterford, MD

Stephen D. Waterford, MD, MS graduated from Harvard Medical School in 2009. He obtained general surgery training from the University of California San Francisco and Massachusetts General Hospital, followed by his fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery from Washington University in St. Louis, where surgery for atrial fibrillation was developed. After advanced training in mitral valve surgery from Mount Sinai Hospital, a premier center for mitral valve repair, Dr. Waterford continued at Mount Sinai Hospital as an Assistant Professor of Cardiac Surgery. 

Dr. Waterford is on the Editorial Board of Innovations Journal and has authored many peer-reviewed manuscripts and book chapters. Dr. Waterford was also the Principal Investigator of the NOVA trial of botulinum toxin for the prevention of post-operative atrial fibrillation at Mount Sinai Hospital.

Dr. Waterford is certified by the American Board of Surgery and American Board of Thoracic Surgery and brings his excellent training and experience to University of Pittsburgh. While he practices the spectrum of adult cardiac surgery, his focus is on mitral valve repair and arrhythmia surgery. He also participates in the robotic cardiac surgery program at the University of Pittsburgh.

Research Interests

Dr. Waterford's research interests focus on mitral valve disease, particularly repair for degenerative disease, as well as on surgery for atrial fibrillation.
