Dr. Murtuza is currently an attending of Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital in Tampa, Florida. He received his MD at the University of Cambridge and his PhD from the University of London. He trained in General Surgery and Cardiothoracic Surgery at Imperial College Hospitals and Royal Brompton Hospital in the UK, respectively. After completion of residency, Dr. Murtuza went on to pursue fellowship in Pediatric and Congenital Cardiac Surgery at the Great Ormond Street and Birmingham Children’s Hospitals in the UK, followed by fellowship in Pediatric Cardiac Surgery at Hopital Necker-Enfants Malades in France. He completed an Advanced International Fellowship in Pediatric and Congenital Cardiac Surgery at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia.

Dr. Murtuza is highly committed to research and scholarly work: to date he has authored or co-authored over 50 peer-reviewed publications. He has 13 published abstracts from international meetings as well as several book chapters. He also serves as a journal reviewer for multiple high-impact scientific journals, including Annals of Thoracic Surgery, Cardiology in the Young, Circulation, European Journal of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Journal of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, and Pediatric Cardiology. He previously worked as a scientific consultant for Reuters. Dr. Murtuza is dedicated to involvement in his profession, having served on multiple committees at Cambridge University and participated in national and international meetings and lectureships.

Research Interests

Dr. Murtuza's research and specialty interests include neonatal and infant cardiac surgery, surgery for corrected transposition, surgery for complex transposition, the Norwood procedure, surgery for double outlet right ventricle (DORV), and single ventricle circulation.
