Dr. Mumtaz completed his surgery residency at the University of Connecticut and cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center.  He received advanced training at the Cleveland Clinic.

He is board-certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.

Under his direction, UPMC Central PA has emerged to be a center of excellence for the treatment of valvular heart disease. He has worked collaboratively with his colleague, Hemal Gada, MD, MBA, interventional cardiologist and co-medical director of structural heart at UPMC in Central PA to establish the busiest and most renowned structural heart program in central Pennsylvania.

Dr. Mumtaz believes in quality and cost-effective, patient-center treatment solutions, continually striving to build and fine-tune the program to achieve these goals.  Through his oversight, the UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute in Central PA has consistently achieved the Society of Thoracic Surgeons’ highest three-star ratings in multiple categories (coronary artery bypass graft surgery) (CAB) only, aortic valve replacement (AVR) only, combined CABG/AVR and mitral valve replacement and repair (MVRR). UPMC Harrisburg has been recognized by U.S. News and World Report as ‘best hospital’ high performing for aortic valve and heart bypass surgery. Individually, Dr. Mumtaz has been recognized by the Pennsylvania Health Care Cost Containment Council in the 2016 Cardiac Surgery Report as the top valve surgeon, based on volume, in the state of Pennsylvania while consistently achieving better than expected outcomes.

Dr. Mumtaz’s specialties include minimally invasive surgery for valvular disease including transcatheter, robotic and right chest intercostal approaches; he established the intercostal surgical valve replacement at UPMC Harrisburg in 2014. He brought aortic valve reconstruction, using the patient’s native pericardium, to central Pennsylvania after training in Japan under Shigeyuki Ozaki, MD, PhD who developed the technique. Dr. Mumtaz also has an interest in total thoracoscopic maze procedure for atrial fibrillation and coronary and aortic surgeries.

He is committed to sharing his talents with others, here and around the world. Dr. Mumtaz actively proctors and teaches other physicians in a variety of techniques. He travels internationally for humanitarian work to help those with no other cardiovascular surgery options.

He is proud to call central Pennsylvania home along with his wife and four children.
